Decoding CrossFit – Meaning of "EMOM"

If you are not a “CrossFitter” you may need help decoding CrossFit terminology to find the true meaning of “EMOM”.

It stands for “Every Minute on the Minute” and it is a type of interval workout where you perform a certain number of reps of an exercise at the top of every minute for a set amount of time and then rest the remainder of that minute. On Monday, our CrossFitters were challenged by an EMOM for 18 minutes.

The benefits of this type of interval workout is you practice the movement with a bit of intensity and plenty of volume to make improvements in both. During that minute, you can focus on those reps and making improvements. Also, it allows for a lot of work to be accumulated quickly so if you are in a rush for time, an EMOM workout is a great way to get things done! It’s a great way to get the blood flowing.

EMOM’s will also help you measure your progression within the workout or from week to week. CrossFit Athlete’s Arena’s Monday EMOM consisted of 3 different movements, one of which was Squat Cleans in the 1st minute. If you did 6 Squat Cleans the 1st minute but you only did 5 Squat Cleans in the 3rd minute you can see you have fallen off pace. If in the following months you have an EMOM with Squat Cleans and you did 7 in the 1st minute, you can see you have increased the number of Squat Cleans you do every minute and you are growing in your CrossFit journey.
